Amherst Pizza & Ale House is a small sports bar with plenty of tvs and cold beer. Its a popular spot for lunch, happy hour, and sporting events. Their menu is very large and has all the sports bar staples; pizza, wings, subs, burgers, sandwiches and wraps, etc. If you cant find something that sounds appetizing, you're probably not hungry. They offer a small kids menu, again made up of the staples; mac n cheese, grilled cheese, pizza, etc. Seating inside can be cramped, but Ale House also offers a more comfortable outdoor patio. The patio is partially covered and boasts a couple tvs as well. Service was a bit labored. By time the waitress came to take our initial drink order, we were ready to place our order. Our appetizer also seemed to take a bit to arrive, as we were served our meals before we had a chance to finish the appetizer.
Fish: Ugh. Lets mention the good first.... The fish and batter was cooked well, and it arrived nearly greaseless. And now the bad.... The batter was flavorless and was so thick that the fish got lost. Ive seen frys like this before, its usually a sign that they're using club soda or baking powder in their batter, and as it cooks it puffs up way too much. Now the fish..... what fish? I searched, and after I found it, I wasn't impressed. All in all, this was a poorly made fry.
Tartar: Ugh x2. I can get behind a dilly tartar sauce, but this was another level. It was as if I was putting straight relish on my fry. I also question the freshness, as when the lid was removed from the portion cup the tartar had that congealed look to it like it had been sitting in a cold fridge for too long.
Sides: Ugh x3. On the bright side, you got well portioned helpings of 4 different sides. Unfortunately not a single one of them was freshly prepared. I'm certain the coleslaw, potato salad, and macaroni salad were all scooped from a giant tub. I'd be the first to admit that frozen steak fries rank a little higher in my book than they probably should (ie. Red Robin), but these came with absolutely zero seasoning on them at all and were as bland as a raw potato.
Overall: Amherst Pizza & Ale House serves plenty of good food. Their Steak & Cheese Pizza as well as their Stuffed Banana Pizza are top notch. And their Garlic Parm Wings are a great change of pace. I mean their menu even has its own section of Strip Steak Sandwiches that all sound outstanding. But if its a fish fry you crave, you'd be better served looking somewhere else.
